Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care Wins 2021 Pinnacle HANYS Award for Antibiotic Stewardship Program
NEW HYDE PARK, NY, 23 November 2021 / PRNewswire / – Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care has been honored by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) with a Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety. Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care has been recognized for implementing an Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) across its large-scale emergency care network.
Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care launched an Antibiotic Stewardship Program in 2019 to monitor and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by providers and taken by patients. In the first year of the program, the network’s 52 emergency care centers saw a 21% drop in total antibiotic use, which equates to 167,000 fewer antibiotic prescriptions. The stewardship program effectively protects patients against antibiotic resistance, side effects and medical costs.
âThe overuse of antibiotics has a huge impact on the physical and financial health of our patients and the community,â said Neal shipley, Medical Director, Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care. âNationally, emergency care centers are responsible for the highest percentage of inappropriate antibiotic use. It was something we just couldn’t ignore, and we are proud that HANYS recognized our team’s unwavering dedication to our customers.
Paving the way for antibiotic management across the country
Inappropriate use of antibiotics is a national problem, particularly in the emergency care space, where 39% of visits result in a prescription for antibiotics. About two million antibiotic-resistant infections and 23,000 deaths occur each year in United States following inappropriate use of antibiotics. Among the accomplishments recognized by HANYS was the scalability and replication potential of Northwell-GoHealth ASP.
The ASP relies on the partnership of clinical leaders, who educate practitioners and patients to foster a culture of antibiotic awareness. Regional GoHealth Urgent Care markets across the country have started adopting Northwell-GoHealth ASP. The organization hopes to see other emergency care centers develop their own programs.
“Antimicrobial resistance is a huge threat,” said Bea Grause, IA, JD, President, Health Care Association of New York State. âWe are honored to celebrate the tremendous work of antibiotic management at Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care. They truly deserve a Pinnacle Award and are a role model for other vendors striving for similar success. “
The HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety annually recognizes successful quality improvement and innovative patient safety initiatives in four categories based on size and type of organization. Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care is the first of four 2021 winners to be announced.
